Why Do We Do This?
Culture eats strategy for breakfast….but just like developing a successful strategy is hard, building a culture of performance requires leadership, diligence, and focus.
After leaving the NZ Army, with 11 years of service, I worked for two bosses who lacked the ability to create a work environment that got the best out of people. I left both of my managers, I enjoyed the job, but not the environment they made me work in.
So, when it came time to build our own organisation three years ago, I focused on building a culture that attracted people, and I came across Tristan White and his book Culture is Everything. I set about building his 19 Steps to a Great Workplace into our business from the start.
There are four main parts to this framework:
- Discover the core – We have a well-documented purpose and core values.
- Document the future – We have a clear plan for what our future will look like.
- Execute relentlessly – We are a remote team that talks regularly and breaks down our future into manageable short term team goals.
- Show more love – We celebrate! This is what this article is all about!
Our Celebration
We have just had another birthday this week, and we have tipped over more milestones towards our three years goals. This is a cause for celebration.
Remember the Year Book that you hung out for at the end of the school year, to look through your achievements as a year level, individually and with friends?
Well, that is what we do too. Because it is hard to sometimes remember the huge amount of work and success you have achieved over the last 12 months, particularly in small business when often it just seems like a grind!
Building connectedness, a sense of belonging and a culture of celebration, for a remote team is incredibly important.
It is also important to thank people. People are central to our business, like most, but often we lose focus of this we focus on products, service, and profits.
If you want support to develop the culture within your workplace, I recommend reading Culture is Everything by Tristan White or, feel free to get in touch with me at [email protected] and I can share more of what I have learnt.
